A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had increased to over 10% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule introduced on recently aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to political events.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
